What is relational therapy?
As humans, we are wired for social connection. It’s no surprise that people who have strong, positive relationships enjoy happier and more fulfilling lives. Central to the relational therapy approach is the concept that our relationships and social world shape us. Essentially, our experience of emotional distress is directly connected to our relational interactions – both positive and negative.
Relational therapists treat psychological and emotional distress by looking at the participants’ behavior patterns and experiences in interpersonal relationships. The goal is to help clients build the skills needed to establish and maintain healthy relationships in their lives (i.e., trust, honesty, safety, authenticity, etc.). Relational therapy recognizes that the process of change is enhanced by the quality of the relationship between therapist and client.
What can relational therapy help with?
- Conflict with your significant other or partner
- The need to push others away or create conflict
- Feeling anxious during social interactions
- Family, friend, or workplace relationships
- Intimacy issues
